RICH HISTORY
Pennsylvania Wine
While Pennsylvania may not be the first state that comes to mind for wine production, it probably should be. Pennsylvania’s long, rich history of enology dates back to colonial times, making it one of the first colonies to produce wine.
STATE FOUNDER
William Penn
In 1682, state founder William Penn brought vine cuttings to Pennsylvania that interlaced with local native grape varieties. The fortuitous accidental result was one of the country’s first successful hybrids. Penn’s hybrid varieties fueled expanded grape production, and in 1787, the first commercial winery of the country was founded in Pennsylvania by its famous shareholders: Alexander Hamilton, Aaron Burr, John Hopkins, and Robert Morris.
